Abutment

A
Structural Engineering / Bridges

The supporting structure at the ends of a bridge that retains the earth of the approach embankment and supports the bridge span. It transfers loads from the bridge superstructure to the foundation.

Also known as "End Support". Critical for resisting horizontal forces from soil and traffic.

Aggregate

A
Concrete Technology

Granular material (sand, gravel, crushed stone) used in concrete and asphalt mixtures. Aggregates occupy about 60-75% of the volume of concrete and provide bulk and stability.

Types: Fine Aggregate (< 4.75mm), Coarse Aggregate (> 4.75mm).

Admixture

Material other than cement, water, and aggregates added to concrete immediately before or during mixing to modify its properties.

Common Types: Plasticizers (increase workability), Accelerators (speed up setting), Retarders (slow down setting), Air-entraining agents.

Axial Load

A
Structural Mechanics

A force applied along the longitudinal axis (centroidal axis) of a structural member (like a column or tie), causing either tension or compression without inducing bending moment (in ideal cases).

Stress (ฯƒ) = P / A, where P is axial load and A is cross-sectional area.

Bending Moment (BM)

Structural Mechanics

The internal moment induced in a structural element when an external force is applied perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. It causes the member to bend.

Positive BM causes sagging (compression on top), Negative BM causes hogging (tension on top).
M = F ร— d (Force ร— Perpendicular Distance). Unit: kNยทm or Nยทmm.
Critical for designing beams and slabs per IS 456.

Bearing Capacity

The maximum average contact pressure between the foundation and the soil which should not produce shear failure in the soil.

Ultimate Bearing Capacity (qu): Pressure at which soil fails.
Safe Bearing Capacity (qs): qu divided by Factor of Safety (FOS).
Allowable Bearing Capacity: qs checked against settlement limits.

The mass of a granular material (soil, aggregate) per unit volume, including the volume of solid particles, water, and voids.

ฯb = M / V (Total Mass / Total Volume).

Cement

C
Binding Materials

A hydraulic binding material that sets and hardens when mixed with water. Portland Cement (OPC) is the most common type used in construction.

Grades: OPC 33, 43, 53 (indicates compressive strength in MPa at 28 days).

Curing

Concrete Construction

The process of maintaining adequate moisture and temperature in concrete after placement to allow hydration of cement to continue, ensuring strength development and durability.

Minimum curing period for ordinary Portland cement is typically 7 days, and 10-14 days for admixture concrete. Methods include ponding, sprinkling, wet gunny bags, and membrane curing.

Column

Structural Elements

A vertical compression member that supports axial loads and sometimes bending moments, transferring them from beams/slabs to the foundation.

Short Column: L/b < 12. Long Column: L/b > 12.
Failure modes: Crushing (short) or Buckling (long).

Dead Load

Loads

Permanent static forces acting on a structure due to its own weight and fixed components (walls, floors, roofing). These loads do not change in magnitude or position over time.

Calculated using unit weights of materials (IS 875 Part 1).

Development Length (Ld)

Reinforcement Detailing

The length of reinforcing bar embedded in concrete required to transfer the stress from the steel to the concrete through bond, preventing slip.

Ld = (ฯ† ร— ฯƒs) / (4 ร— ฯ„bd)
Where ฯ† = diameter, ฯƒs = stress, ฯ„bd = bond stress (increased by 60% for deformed bars).

Density Index (ID)

Soil Mechanics

A measure of the relative density of coarse-grained soils (cohesionless), expressed as a ratio of the difference between the maximum void ratio and natural void ratio to the difference between max and min void ratios.

ID = (emax - en) / (emax - emin)

Elastic Modulus (Young's Modulus)

Material Properties

The ratio of stress to strain within the elastic limit of a material. It measures the stiffness of a material. Higher modulus means less deformation under load.

E = Stress / Strain. For Concrete: Ec = 5000โˆšfck (IS 456).

Effective Span

Structural Design

The distance used in structural analysis calculations to determine moments and shears. It depends on the support conditions and end bearings.

For simply supported beams: Min(Centre-to-centre of supports, Clear span + effective depth).

Earth Pressure

The force exerted by soil on a retaining structure. Three states exist: At Rest, Active (soil pushes outwards), and Passive (soil resists movement).

Calculated using Rankine or Coulomb theories.

Fine Aggregate

Concrete Materials

Aggregates passing through a 4.75 mm IS sieve and retained on a 0.075 mm sieve. Typically sand (natural or manufactured).

Fills voids between coarse aggregates and provides workability.

Factor of Safety (FOS)

Design Philosophy

The ratio of the ultimate strength (or capacity) of a component to the actual working stress (or demand). It accounts for uncertainties in material properties, loads, and construction.

FOS = Ultimate Strength / Allowable Stress
In Limit State Design (IS 456), partial safety factors are used instead of a single FOS.

Foundation

The lowest part of a structure in direct contact with the ground, designed to transmit the load of the structure safely to the soil below without exceeding its bearing capacity or causing excessive settlement.

Types: Shallow (Isolated, Combined, Raft) and Deep (Pile, Well, Caisson).

Fineness Modulus (FM)

Aggregate Testing

An empirical factor obtained by adding the cumulative percentages of aggregate retained on a standard series of sieves and dividing the sum by 100. It indicates the average size of the particles.

Higher FM = Coarser aggregate. Lower FM = Finer aggregate.
